A little bit about our game.. |
 |
Sierra On-line was the original producer of Space Quest and
other classic adventure games such as Kings Quest and Leisure
Suit Larry.
Since 1998 however, the company has changed somewhat. As part
of their sale to Cendant, the office in Oakhurst, the place of
adventure game lore, was closed and it's employees let go. The
new company, working as a division of Cendant, has acted more
in the role of a publisher, helping to bring us titles such as
Half-Life.
As Sierra's priorities have seemingly shifted away from adventure
gaming, we felt it our duty to keep the Roger Wilco legacy alive,
at least for one more romp through space.
Although we are currently attempting to discuss the matter with
Sierra, we have little correspondance. What we have confirmed
is that Sierra does not own all of the trademarks involved. The
term Space Quest, as it appears in computer games belongs to
the Children's Museum of Indianapolis. However, we still need
their permission to use Roger Wilco, on which they do own the
trademark.
The good news is they haven't tried to stop the project. And
we've also recruited an ex-Sierra employee and co-writer of
Space Quest 6, Josh Mandel. So they haven't said "yes"
but they haven't said "no" either. For the time being,
we are proceeding with caution.
SQ7 is a continuation of the popular Space Quest series of games,
made by Mark Crowe and Scott Murphy, with Josh Mandel doing the
greater part of Space Quest 6. After the first six games Sierra
Online decided to drop the series because of lack of interest in
the adventure game genre.
Though we have all written and emailed trying to get adventure
games back in production, Sierra has held fast in their decision.
Since Sierra has decided that Space Quest wasn't on the "to do"
list, we decided to put it on ours.
What we hope to do with SQ7 is make a fan game that plays like
a retail game. I hope to bring out the Scott Murphy in each of
ourselves combine it all and make a "Super-Scott". SQ7 will add
new elements to the Space Quest world, but still have a familiar
feel to it.
We've all seen projects die on us before, and it has hurt the
community. we won't let that happen with SQ7. As Colin Davis
has been quoted to say "If I have to finish it myself, using
stick figures, so be it".
